1 Gigatonne

1 Gigatonne = 0.1% of all the carbon emitted since the start of the Industrial Revolution. The goal of Elpis is to create a 1 gigatonne carbon sink made from biodegradable materials by 2050. It’s a huge quantity. If Wembley Stadium was filled with water, 900 of them would weigh 1 gigatonne. Success is unlikely but if failure looks like 100 megatonnes, that’s not so bad, neither is 10 megatonnes for that matter. If Elpis succeeds, 999 other companies will have to be as successful to fully capture all of the emissions contributing to climate change. Again, if all of these emissions are captured, this would be a tremendous success. If not, every megatonne counts.
